Vaccination before and during pregnancy: what you need to know

Vaccination before and during pregnancy: what you need to know

February 21, 2026

Vaccination is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to protect yourself and your future baby from serious diseases. Proper planning of vaccines before pregnancy and certain vaccinations during pregnancy help reduce the risk of severe complications for both mother and baby.

Vaccinations before pregnancy:

  • Rubella — a live vaccine and should not be given during pregnancy. It protects against congenital rubella syndrome in the baby
  • Varicella (chickenpox) — also a live vaccine and should be completed before pregnancy
  • A pregnant woman without immunity to chickenpox can develop severe illness
  • Influenza — can be given in advance, especially if pregnancy overlaps with flu season. It protects both mother and baby in the first months of life

Vaccinations during pregnancy:

  • Influenza — recommended at any stage of pregnancy, preferably in the second trimester. Protects both mother and baby
  • Pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus (Tdap) — optimally between 27 and 36 weeks of gestation. Provides maternal antibodies that protect the baby in the first months of life
  • COVID-19 — recommended at any stage of pregnancy. Reduces the risk of severe disease in the mother and the newborn

Why planning vaccination in advance matters:

  • Timely vaccination reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy
  • Helps avoid unnecessary restrictions and stress during pregnancy
  • Provides protection for the baby from the very first days of life

Vaccines to avoid during pregnancy

Rubella, mumps, measles, and varicella — these are live vaccines and should be administered only before pregnancy to avoid potential risks to the baby

Most importantly: vaccination is safe, effective, and evidence-based. By planning vaccines in advance and following your doctor’s recommendations during pregnancy, you protect your own health and give your baby the best possible start in life.
