What is spirometry?
Spirometry is a simple test to check how well your lungs work. It measures how much air you can breathe in and out and how fast the air flows. This test helps find lung diseases like asthma and chronic bronchitis and helps choose the right treatment.
Rules for the spirometry test:
Empty stomach:
• Come to the test on an empty stomach. If the test is not in the morning, you can have a light snack 2 hours before the test (without caffeine foods or drinks)
Avoid caffeine:
• Do not use caffeine products (strong tea, coffee, energy drinks, and some medicines like headache pills “Solpadein Fast” or “Citramon” and cold medicines like “Rinza”) for 4 hours before the test
No smoking:
• Do not smoke for 4 hours before the test
No exercise:
• Avoid physical exercise on the day of the test before your appointment
Stay сalm:
• Arrive in a calm and relaxed state. Try not to worry, avoid stress, and get a good night’s sleep before the test
Avoid illness:
• Do not come for the test if you have symptoms of a cold or flu without checking with your doctor first
Medicine check:
• Ask your doctor which medicines you can or cannot take before the test. For example, stop using inhaled steroids, long-acting theophylline, bronchodilators, and some antihistamines (like “Atarax” or “Dimedrol”) 24 hours before the test. Do not use epinephrine (even for dental work) 8 hours before the test
Wear loose clothing:
• Wear comfortable, loose clothes that do not restrict your movement or press on your chest
Dental prostheses:
• If you have removable dental prostheses, do not remove them. Removing them may change the shape of your mouth, making it hard to hold the spirometer correctly and causing air leaks
Arrivall. It is best to arrive 15 minutes early to have time to sit and rest before the test.
