Good sleep is more than just 8 hours: what QQRT means and why sleep quality matters as much as duration
In our previous article (link), we discussed why sleep is a complex cyclical process rather than a passive state. We also compared sleep with other basic human needs and physical activity, placing them on the same level of importance. So what is actually required for sleep to provide all these benefits?
For many years, we believed that sleep duration was the only important measure of healthy sleep. Today, however, we know that sleep involves much more than simply the number of hours spent in bed.

- Sleep latency — the time it takes to fall asleep;
- Sleep efficiency — how continuous and uninterrupted sleep is;
- Sleep duration — the total number of hours slept;
- Subjective sleep quality — how satisfied a person feels with their sleep.
Additional measures are also used for more detailed evaluation, including analysis of NREM and REM sleep stages. This requires sleep studies such as polysomnography with EEG, allowing specialists to assess the overall architecture of sleep.
Rather than focusing on complex terminology, let's take a more practical approach.

Together, these four elements cover the fundamental characteristics of healthy sleep while making them easy to apply in everyday life.
Q — Quantity: sleep duration
This is the most intuitive aspect of sleep and, for many years, was considered the primary—if not the only—indicator of healthy sleep.
Current evidence suggests that most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
Why is it important?
The body needs enough time to complete all of the physiological processes that occur during sleep.
Without sufficient sleep duration, many restorative processes cannot be completed effectively, reducing the overall benefits of sleep and gradually affecting health.

Q — Quality: sleep quality
Sleep quality is perhaps the most complex component of healthy sleep.
One of its most important elements is sleep continuity.
Sleep continuity refers to the proportion of time spent asleep compared with the total time spent in bed.
A sleep efficiency of approximately 85% or higher is generally considered healthy.
Why is it important?
As discussed in our previous article, sleep is a highly organized cyclical process.
Different sleep stages alternate throughout the night while the brain and body carry out numerous restorative functions.
Every awakening essentially forces the brain to restart from the lighter stages of sleep.
This doesn't erase the benefits of the sleep you've already had, but it may reduce the efficiency of many restorative processes.
What can you do?
Unfortunately, improving sleep quality is more complicated than simply sleeping longer.
Many different factors influence sleep quality, and each may require an individual approach.
The most universal recommendation is to practice good sleep hygiene, although this topic deserves a dedicated discussion.
It's also important to remember that if poor sleep is caused by anxiety, emotional stress, or another underlying condition, those issues should also be addressed.
R — Regularity: consistency
Regularity refers to maintaining consistent bedtimes and wake-up times.
Why is it important?
Regularity is closely linked to your body's circadian rhythms—your internal biological clock.
These rhythms regulate many daily physiological processes, including the sleep–wake cycle.
A consistent schedule reduces the need for your body to constantly readjust, making it easier to fall asleep, wake up, and maintain healthy sleep patterns.
What can you do?
Try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day, including weekends.
A variation of 20–30 minutes is generally acceptable.
Keep in mind that consistency refers to the time you actually fall asleep, not simply when you get into bed.
T — Timing: bedtime
Timing refers to when you go to sleep.
Why is it important?
Bedtime is also closely connected to circadian rhythms.
While regularity helps maintain your biological clock, choosing an appropriate bedtime allows you to take full advantage of it.
Under normal circumstances, circadian rhythms promote wakefulness in the morning and gradually prepare the body for sleep during the evening.
The better your bedtime aligns with your internal clock, the greater the likelihood of restorative, high-quality sleep.
What can you do?
You've probably heard about morning larks and night owls.
Some people naturally feel better waking up early and going to bed early.
Others naturally prefer later bedtimes and later mornings.
These differences are real and are influenced, at least in part, by genetics.
However, it's important not to confuse biological chronotype with simply staying up late out of habit.
Most people actually belong to an intermediate chronotype, somewhere between the two extremes.

Why is good-quality sleep so important?
The effects of insufficient sleep range from obvious short-term consequences to more subtle long-term ones.
Almost everyone has experienced what happens after a poor night's sleep:
- reduced concentration;
- difficulty maintaining attention;
- problems learning and remembering new information;
- emotional instability;
- feeling that even routine tasks require much greater effort.
This happens because sleep is far more than simply a pause between waking hours.
During sleep, the brain and body actively work to:
- process and consolidate new memories;
- regulate emotional responses;
- support immune function;
- regulate hormone activity;
- promote recovery from the physical and mental demands of the day.
When sleep deprivation becomes chronic, these processes become progressively less effective.
The changes often develop gradually rather than dramatically.
Over time, it becomes harder to make decisions, stay emotionally resilient, maintain motivation, learn new skills, and recover from stress.
